UPDATE: To all the comedians out there, and concerned readers as well, the upside-down photos are a trick of the iPhone and a result of my super-duper email-to-blog software not coping with the iPhone's ability to take photos upside-down and show them the right way around.

For fun we had a family excursion to Parramatta. Not for the destination but for Zoë to experience the fun of what she calls the "special red bus road" aka the new T-Way bus-only road network in Sydney's North-West.

Just what the exact quotation from The Wind in the Willows is escapes me just now, but it referred to the simple pleasure of simply messing about in boats.

Well today, after much anticipation by Zoë, she and I hired a boat. We lasted 30 minutes into our 2 hour hire before she compelled me to turn back!

Where do your senate votes go?

As we all know, there is a federal election coming up on 21 August.

I'm one of those people who insist on filling out my own preferences on a senate ballot, rather than let the party I choose to vote "1" for decide it for me. In my case, I beleive that the best way forward, regardless of my own personal political preferences, is to let a major party govern properly. I do not like situations in which the balance-of-power is held by a minority party not elected by the majority.

So I preference the two major parties 1 and 2 and put the minor parties after that. The preferences reported to the AEC by these major parties put greater distance between them (it is moot in the case of major parties to a degree anyway, but you get the point).

This website is run by a guy in Melbourne. He admits he is a Greens voter but as far as I can tell is not in any way Green partisan on this website.

You can make your own "how to vote" ticket and print it and take it with you on election day.
