It's the simple things that a child delights in that make raising children so wonderful, I reckon.
We gave Zoe a torch today. It's an Energizer one with Disney-branding (Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Ariel on it). We bought it for her as a gift for when she sleeps the night entirely in her own bed, for since we moved to Lithgow she hadn't been very successful at that. Because she asks for her own torch every time we go shopping, and because she's flattened the batteries in my torches, we told her this would be the arrangement. So tonight we had the presentation. Many of you have been down this road before for yourselves, but it's worth sharing this anyway. Of course, words or even photographs or movie footage cannot capture what is like to be there. So she is in her room, and I got the torch. I walked into her room with it behind my back and sat on the bed with Michelle. Zoe stood before us, eyes alight with excitement. She didn't know what sort of torch it would be, and the look of delight was just wonderful as it dawned on her that it was a Disney torch. She was wearing her favourite dress-up clothes, a Sleeping Beauty "princess dress", and was delighted that SB was in the centre of the three Disney characters. We put the batteries in for her and showed her how to use it and she ran to the light switch to turn it off. We played with the torch in the dark for a while, learning its flash mode as well as normal torch operation. We marvelled at its 'gems' that surround the head of the reflector and light up with the globe. We read a story and torch and Zoe went to bed; I'm about to go and switch if off if, as I expect, it is still blazing away. It's the simple moments that make it wonderful, isn't it? I've shed a little tear of joy just sharing this with you.
