Michelle is a reformed charismatic, in the sense that she was once charismatic and has reformed herself from it. Much like a reformed smoker. In fact the similarities are striking. Like reformed smokers, reformed charismatics like this are intensely angry about anyone who practises charismatic theology or who shows evidence of being charismatic in their Christian life. But what we mean by the form "Reformed Charismatic" is, in reality, somewhat different from "reformed smoker". We are referring to someone who claims to have theology that is both "Reformed' (put simply, 'Calvinistic' or, basically, strongly from the reformation) and "Charismatic" (that is, expresses Christian life with an expectation that the activity of the Spirit of God as portrayed in the Book of Acts must, of necessity, continue today). Personally, I believe that charismatic theology is a pious heresy. Pious because charismatics seek to honour God in their charismatic worship, and they genuinely believe that non-Charismatics deny the Spirit of God because we don't bang on about him all the time. Heresy because it is clear in Scripture that the Spirit of God always does the bidding of the Father and the Son, and does so in order to glorify them, so to bang on about the Spirit is, in my understanding of Scripture, to dishonour God by honouring a part of him that seeks not to be honoured. John Woodhouse explains this a lot better than I: Phillip Jensen interviews John Woodhouse - Reformed Charismatics from Audio Advice on Vimeo.
