[Image of a whisper]Recently I preached from Psalm 1. In the application section I drew out that the wicked/sinful/mockers are from within God's people in the context of this Psalm and talked about the "Coffee Culture Critics", those who "do coffee" and critique the church's ministry.

I mentioned about how people canvas opinion about what is wrong with the church, self-selecting those of like mind.

Since then I've had a number of people (including one person who said it on the way out of church after that sermon was preached!) who say, "I haven't been canvassing opinion but this is what I and others think..."

Wow, that's growth. In the past they would say, "This is what I and others think...". Now they preface it with a disclaimer.

This is the Word at work.

Norma Butler  - What I think   |source210.50.143.21 |21-01-2010 18:34:19
If I have a comment to make regarding something I think about it A LOT before
speaking it, I meditate pon the effect speaking it will have , on the colour I
will be painted if i speak it, on my intention if I were to speak it.....the
last is the most crucial for me, because if I REALLY think about it honestly ,
there is usually no TRULY pure intent. Most times for me it has to do with what
I have heard called öpinion idolatry", and I think the term is very
appropriate. I prefer the way I think over the way others
think.....

Consequently, i do not share my opinion much any more. Especially
in church, as my church is where God has planted me to grow. He has çompanion
planted'me to help me develop in areas that I would not otherwise grow. i am
forced to face the lack in myself when it comes to truly worshipping. I once
depended on music especially to propel me into a 'state of worship'..... I can
no longer rely ...

avatar Norma, thanks for your lovely reply. Although we have not had a lot of
interactions I have learned very quickly that you have a lot of wisdom that is
worth sharing. So please don't hold back! I value the wisdom of your
comment here but also I would love to hear your feedback on broader as well as
more specific topics. It's the back channel communications that are not only
hurtful for the pastoral team but undermine the ministry of the church.
