altIt's been bugging me for a few years now... I've wanted to listen again to Six Ribbons but couldn't think how or where to get it.

I remember it from my childhood when it was either the theme music for the series Against the Wind or a significant part of the soundtrack for that show. But it wasn't bugging me enough that I might want to do a google search!

Then tonight Zoƫ was playing with a ribbon, wrapping it around my arm and fingers and pulling it through, then wrapping it like a belt around herself and getting me to tie bows in it. Eventually she went and got another ribbon from somewhere so we both had one.

So I started singing (as best I could remember it) Six Ribbons.

Then my lack of memory of the words and the haunting beauty of the melody drove me to search the lyrics and then I realised something I should have thought of ages ago: I have an iPhone. iPhones have iPod funtionality, including iTunes. So I downloaded a rendition of Six Ribbons and played it a few times. It got me misty eyed, partly because of its romance but also because of the way it took me back to my childhood (I recall 'sneaking' out to see the show on the telly, as I was too young to see it when it was on, but I was fascinated even as a kid by the way it recreated early white Australia).

One final thing was bugging me: was it an imported song 'covered' by the show Against the Wind? I had always assumed so, that it was some folk song attempting to sound Irish.

The thing that floored me is that it was written by Jon English--the star of the show--himself. I didn't know he had it in him! What a beautiful song. It's on youtube here (could have saved my $1.69 on iTunes!).
