A number of baby boomers have complained recently that church is "too
Anglican" since I became the rector.
They flesh it out like this: "You see, Glenn, this church has become
something of a community church and by making it "too Anglican" you
are driving people away.
Hang on! Last I checked the sign at the front still said "Anglican"
and the building we enjoy the free use of still belong to the Property
Trust of the Anglican Church, Diocese of Sydney. And of course there
are many other benefits of being part of the denomination.
It strikes me as a little selfish to expect something for nothing at a
local level and not to ackowedge the denomination behind it.
Over the next few weeks I'll engage with the specific complaints of
those who are complaining to me about my being "too Anglican" but for
now, given the Reformed, evalgelical character of true Anglicanism,
there is no greater compliment they pay me. If Anglicanism offends
them, well, I'm VERY sad to see them leave. But if Anglicanism offends
them they are not going to find me willing to soften the gospel in
order to remove offence.
I'll develop this thread over coming weeks.
